LOF Volunteer Orientation and Field Training

Interested in becoming a Tidewater Docent volunteer for the Laguna Ocean Foundation? Join us for our volunteer orientation with the in-field training in Laguna Beach on Saturday, October18th, from 11:30AM to 3:30PM. This is the initial field training and orientation that is required in order to volunteer at the tidepools. You must also complete one additional in-person field training at the Goff and Treasure Island tidepools and an online training course about Marine Protected Areas.

At this orientation, you'll learn about the MPAs, tidepool species, and the next steps in the process of becoming an LOF volunteer. We will start the orientation at our meeting space to go over a powerpoint presentation and answer any questions before heading to the Crescent Bay tidepools for your first field training. The orientation will run from 11:30AM-1:00PM and the field training at the Crescent Bay tidepools will run from 1:30PM-3:30PM. Light refreshments will be served during the orientation.

Volunteer Orientation with LOF and Ocean Institute

Interested in becoming a Tidewater Docent volunteer for the Laguna Ocean Foundation? Join us for our next volunteer training at the Ocean Institute on September 30th, from 5PM-7PM.

This volunteer orientation is held in collaboration with the Laguna Ocean Foundation, Ocean Institute and the City of Dana Point. This introductory orientation is required to start volunteering out at the tidepools. You'll learn about the MPAs, tidepool species, and the next steps in the process of becoming a tidepool education volunteer.

Please note that you'll still need to attend in-person field trainings at Goff/Treasure Island and Crescent Bay tidepools to complete your training process.

LOF Presents Tides of Change

Join us to kick off Laguna Ocean Foundation’s Tides of Change series, a quarterly celebration of ocean science, conservation, and community action!

The evening will start off with food and drinks provided by Starfish, and engaging conversations on ocean advocacy. We will welcome guest speaker Dr. Brendan Talwar, shark researcher at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, who will share his work with global oceans and the conservation of sharks and rays.

Guests will also experience interactive demonstrations of Laguna Ocean Foundation programs, including:

  • Tidepool model for ocean education

  • Restoration of the Aliso Creek Estuary

  • Ocean education efforts led by staff biologists and tidewater docents

  • Storytelling of the Laguna Coastline through StoryMaps

Guided Tidepool Tour

Join the Rivian and Laguna Ocean Foundation (LOF) for a guided tidepool tour at the Heisler Park tidepools. LOF's team of Biologists will share their knowledge about the different animals that call the tidepools home and learn how to safely explore while following the Marine Protected Area rules.

Meet at Rivian for 5:15PM and plan to start walking over to the tidepools by 5:30PM. The tour will end at approximately 6:30PM which is when the doors open for LOF's new speaker series talk, Tides of Change. Learn more about that here and RSVP for the tidepool tour today!

Interested in becoming a Tidewater Docent volunteer for the Laguna Ocean Foundation? Join us for our next volunteer training in Laguna Beach on Friday, July 18th, from 8:30AM to 12:30PM. This is the initial field training and orientation that is required in order to volunteer at the tidepools. You must also complete one additional in-person field training at Goff Island tidepools and an online training course about Marine Protected Areas.

Meet at Crescent Bay for the field training component from 8:30AM-10:30AM followed by the orientation at 247c Forest Ave. on the Promenade from 11:00AM-12:30PM. Light refreshments will be served during the orientation.

KelpFest Algae Walk & Talk

Laguna Ocean Foundation is launching our very first “Algae Walk & Talk” experience from 1PM-2PM during KelpFest. LOF’s very own phycologist (algae expert!) will lead a tour from the Cobblestones over to the Heisler Park tidepools. You’ll learn all there is to know about the different algae, like kelp, that are found on the coast of Laguna. The experience will end at the Heisler Park tidepools where you’ll explore the different algae that call the tidepools home and the important role they play in the coastal ecosystem.

Space is limited to 25 people. Please arrive to KelpFest by 12:45 to check-in with LOF and reserve your space.

KelpFest Tidepool Tour

Join the Rivian and Laguna Ocean Foundation during their KelpFest celebration for a guided tidepool tour at the Heisler Park tidepools. LOF's team of Biologists and Tidewater Docents will share their knowledge about the different animals that call the tidepools home. Learn how to safely explore while following the Marine Protected Area rules.

Meet at Rivian for 11:00AM and plan to start walking over to the tidepools by 11:15AM. The tour will end at approximately 12:15PM which still provides ample time to check out KelpFest!

When visiting the tidepools, you'll want to make sure that you're dressed comfortably as we will be moving around quite a bit to access the tidepools. We recommend wearing clothes that you don't mind potentially getting wet or dirty. Shoes should be closed toe or sandals with straps. We don't recommend flip flops or crocs since they're not secured on your feet. Please make sure to bring water to stay hydrated and appropriate sun protection (marine safe sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, etc.).

Join us on Saturday, June 7th, 2025 along the Cobblestones of Main Beach! This year’s event features live music from the SeaView Serenaders and a special appearance by the Huntington Beach Mermaids! Whether you’re coming to get your picture taken with the mermaids, enjoying the live music, or participating in one of the many hands-on activities offered by our amazing exhibitors, there’s something for everyone!

We have a fun day filled with opportunities to learn, explore, and give back to the community. Here’s our schedule of events:

Tidepool Bioblitz for World Ocean Month!

June is Ocean Awareness Month and we want to kick it off right. Come join LOF for some tidepool exploration for a state wide bioblitz. We will be using the free app iNaturalist to add our tidepool data to scientific data across the state. This state wide bioblitz is all month long! If you are not able to join us but want to tidepool on your own while adding data for the bioblitz email Carissa, carissa@lagunaoceanfoundation.org, for more information.

 Be sure to bring water, ocean safe sunscreen, and good tide pooling shoes.

Earth Night presented by Earth Boutique

Come unwind in beautiful Laguna Beach and join us for Earth Night on Friday, April 25th at the Laguna Beach Cultural Arts Center! The event will be closing Earth Week. We’ll dive into ocean preservation, land conservation, and biodiversity protection for future generations. We’ll also discuss the serious impact of recent fires and algae blooms on marine species, as well as the actions deployed and needed to mitigate these effects.

Relax and unwind with Laguna Ocean Foundation during our Earth Day happy hour from 3PM-6PM at the Rivian South Coast Theater. Talk with LOF staff and board members to learn more about our role in protecting and educating about the Laguna coast.

Tidepool Tour at Heisler Park

Whether you’re joining us after our Earth Day Beach Clean-up or joining us just for fun, we’re excited to show you around the tidepools at Heisler Park! Our Biologists will teach you about the Marine Protected Area rules to ensure fun and safe exploration, but they’ll also point out all of the different species that call the tidepools home.

We recommend sandals with straps or close-toed shoes that are okay to get wet. Please, no flip-flops or crocs. Don’t forget your sun protection and water for hydration.

Join us over at the Rivian South Coast Theater after the tour for small bites to eat at our Earth Day Happy Hour from 3PM-6PM upstairs.
